December 21, 2012 seemed to be on the minds of most people as 2013 approached. Well, the Mayans were proved wrong and 2012 ended without much fanfare. In this inaugural post of the new year, we celebrate life and a new season - a season to rebuild foundations and sow the seeds for a plentiful harvest later this year.
In this new year, a new Mathematics syllabus has also been launched with the Sec 1 students. One of the key changes being implemented is the introduction of real-world context problems which is concerned with the application of math in practical situations.
So what are real-world context problems? In the coming days, teachers of the HSS Maths Department will be giving you a taste of these kinds of problems. For now, have a look at one such problem.
The picture was taken at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve many years ago. You visited the reserve recently and realized that the letters ‘V’ and ‘o’ from the word, 'Visitor' have fallen off. As part of your D&T project, you are required to construct a new set of wooden letters to replace them. The thickness of the wooden block is 3 cm. Diagram 1 and 2 as shown below reflect the dimensions.
a) Find the total surface of the wood needed for the letters 'V' and 'o'.
(Take π to be 22/7 )
b) Find the total volume of the wood required.
c) (i) The dot for the letter 'i' has signs of peeling off. It has a diameter of 2.3 cm. Find the volume of wood required to construct this replacement.
(ii) Will the portion in the centre removed from 'o' be sufficient to construct a replacement for the dot? If it is sufficient, calculate the percentage of wood left from the portion removed from the centre of 'o'.
