Suduko Semi-Finals and Grand Finals

On a sunny Sunday morning (23 August 2009), 10 Sec 3 pupils took part in the Sudoku Masters 2009 semi-finals organised by Mediacorp held at Central@Clark Quay. The 10 of them were selected when they emerged top among some 90 Sec 3 pupils in a Preliminary Round held in school.

The competition was tough with a total of 270 participants from 27 schools in the Semi-finals including schools such as National JC, Hwa Chong Institution, NUS High, RI, RGS and River Valley High School.

Out of the 10 participants, 3 of them [Loh Ye Xiang (3E1), Leow Wei Qi (3E2) and Choong Yew Fei (3E3)].did exceptionally well and qualified for the Grand Finals held on the same day.

Although they did not win a prize, they brought back valuable experiences and had a fun filled day competing against their peers. We look forward to exposing more of our students to such competition in the future!

Did you know?
Its origins can be traced back by as far as the 18th century where Leonhard Euler, devised a game where the numbers in a grid only appeared only once in both top to bottom and left to right directions. The birth of the Sudoku puzzle as we know it began in the 1970s when Dell Magazines began publishing puzzles with a 9x9 square grid using the same concept of Leonhard. The standard 9x9 Sudoku puzzle we are familiar with now was developed by Nikoli, a Japanese puzzle company, in the 1980s. Not only was the name Sudoku was given to the puzzle, they also refined the puzzle game by restricting the number of revealed squares and revealing them in a symmetrical fashion.
